The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies was established 2010 by SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira and the Klaus Tschira foundation as a private, non-profit research institute.

HITS conducts basic research for processing and structuring large amounts of data in various fields of natural sciences, mathematics and computer sciences. The research areas range from astrophysics to cell biology.

In September 2014, the HITS Foundation was established and is one of the shareholders of HITS gGmbH, together with Heidelberg University and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Furthermore, HITS cooperates with other universities and research institutes, as well as with industrial partners. HITS’ primary funding agencies are the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the German Research Foundation and the European Union.
